WNBA Star Sophie Cunningham Gets Surprise Invite from WOW – Women Of Wrestling

After a standout moment defending Indiana Fever teammate Caitlin Clark on the court, WNBA star Sophie Cunningham has caught the attention of the world of professional wrestling. Women Of Wrestling (WOW) founder and co-owner David McLane publicly extended an open invitation to Cunningham during WOW’s panel at the 2025 San Diego Comic-Con, and fans are buzzing about the possibility.

Cunningham made headlines in June following a flagrant foul and on-court scuffle with the Connecticut Sun, stepping in to protect Clark during a heated matchup. The moment sparked widespread conversation, and now, McLane believes her fierce loyalty and physical presence could translate perfectly to the squared circle.

“I’m from Indiana. I’m from Indianapolis,” McLane said at the Comic-Con panel. “That’s the home of not only the second-best basketball team in the country this last year, but also the biggest name in professional basketball today, Caitlin Clark. And Caitlin Clark has an enforcer. She’s the Marty McSorley to Wayne Gretzky, and she is a stunning athlete. I flew to Las Vegas and watched them play the Aces, and I would love to have Sophie Cunningham in WOW. She takes down the competition and makes sure Caitlin Clark is safe on the floor. We’d love to have her in our ring.”

The moment sparked widespread conversation, and now, McLane believes her fierce loyalty and physical presence could translate perfectly to the squared circle.

Cunningham, currently in her first season with the Indiana Fever after a multi-team trade from the Phoenix Mercury, has quickly made an impact both on and off the court — earning a reputation as a reliable scorer and passionate teammate. She also recently went viral for a TikTok video calling out inconsistent WNBA officiating, which resulted in a $500 fine from the league. Her response? Pure Sophie: “I got fined $500 for this TikTok 🤣🤣 idk why this is funny to me… like ok 👍🏼 you got it bud!”

McLane’s invitation wasn’t just a passing comment — it’s part of a growing tradition of crossovers between sports and wrestling. Just last year, Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton made appearances with WWE, even teaming up with Logan Paul and clashing with Jalen Brunson at Madison Square Garden.

WOW co-owner and Lakers Governor Jeanie Buss, who joined McLane on the Comic-Con panel, also praised the evolution of women’s wrestling and its appeal to elite athletes from diverse sports backgrounds.

“David first invited me to see Women Of Wrestling years ago,” Buss said. “I came up with every excuse not to, because I thought it was going to be jello wrestling or mud wrestling — what it used to be in the ’90s. But I was blown away. These are real athletes, and it’s a real sport. I’m so proud of how far it’s come.”

Buss also emphasized the importance of expanding professional opportunities for female athletes, noting that WOW can serve as a platform for competitors beyond traditional wrestling — providing a path for women to be paid professionals in a world that often overlooks their talent.

As WOW continues to break barriers and redefine women’s sports entertainment, the idea of Sophie Cunningham stepping into the ring represents more than a publicity stunt — it reflects the very spirit of WOW: athleticism, empowerment, and the courage to stand up for what matters.

Whether Cunningham laces up wrestling boots next or not, she’s already proven she has the heart of a WOW Superhero.
